Denver Museum of Nature & Science Announces 2012 Highlights

Offerings include two temporary exhibitions, new IMAX 3D films, and SCFD Free Days, plus the monthly Science Lounge series for ages 21+ and the summer Sci-Fi Film Series

Denver-December 5, 2011-The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is offering an impressive lineup of temporary exhibitions, IMAX 3D films, and additional programming in the coming year. Included below are highlights for the cultural organization, which serves more than 1.42 million people annually and has a membership roster of more than 60,000 households.

EXHIBITIONS

Lizards & Snakes
Opens Friday, February 3, 2012
FREE with Museum Admission
See 60 live animals at the Museum. The Burmese python, gila monster, komodo dragon, green basilisk, and more star in this fascinating exhibition. Featuring an impressive lineup of lizards and snakes from five continents, Lizards & Snakes introduces visitors to these adaptable, colorful, and sometimes dangerous creatures. Using live animals, real and cast fossils, extensive multimedia, hands-on interactives, and an activity area specifically for young visitors, the exhibition explores this group's evolution, movement, and feeding habits. It will enthrall, educate, and engage visitors of all ages.

A Day in Pompeii
Opens Friday, September 14, 2012
Fall Blockbuster
What nature destroyed, it also preserved. Hundreds of exceptional artifacts offer an insider's glimpse into the daily life-and tragic end-of this ancient Roman city that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. On display are archaeological treasures that lay buried in Pompeii's ruins, preserved as if sealed in a time capsule. Highlights include marble and bronze sculptures, jewelry, gold coins, everyday household items, and more. Visitors will uncover the treasures of a city steeped in legend, examine casts of the volcano's victims frozen in their last moments, and discover the power of volcanoes past and present.

Flying Monsters 3D

Uncover the truth about the mysterious pterosaurs, whose wingspans of up to 40 feet were equal to that of a modern jet plane.  Enter the lush and alien environment in which these creatures lived,
and experience real flying monsters.

To the Arctic
Opens in Spring 2012 (Exact Date TBD)
Take an extraordinary journey to a place of extremes that few ever dare to go. Venture across floating ice with a mother polar bear and her two cubs as they struggle to survive in the face of natural predators and a rapidly changing climate.

Space Junk
Opens in Summer 2012 (Exact Date TBD)
See mindboggling collisions, both natural and human-made, and learn about the troubling legacy of space exploration-a growing ring of floating debris that casts a shadow over future space discovery.

 
SCFD COMMUNITY FREE DAYS

SCIENCE LOUNGE-MONTHLY EVENT

Enjoy a mind-expanding experience at the Museum with cocktails and entertainment every third Thursday of the month for adults age 21+. Below are brief descriptions for the offerings in early 2012. 

• January: Know Your Snow-Whether you're always on the lookout for the next call-in-sick powder day or just love a good snowball fight, you'll get to know snow like never before.

• February: Hugs & Hisses-Learn the courtship dances of the monitor lizard and bearded dragon, tour the Lizards & Snakes exhibition, and head to the bar for The Snakebite.

• March: Crack the Case-Try your hand at forensic sleuthing and solve a mystery at the Museum. Armed with science and a Bloody Mary, identify and analyze evidence at the scene of a crime.

SCI-FI FILM SERIES-2nd ANNUAL SUMMER EVENT

The Museum is partnering again with the Denver Film Society to present the Sci-Fi Film Series.  Scheduled for July and August 2012, the program features Museum scientists and film experts as they screen famous sci-fi films, break down the science behind these alternative possibilities, and separate fact from fiction
