Denver Museum of Nature & Science Becomes Smithsonian Institution Affiliate

Denver - June 1, 2012- The Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Rocky Mountain Region's leading resource for informal science education, has been accepted as a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate. The affiliation-announced today by G. Wayne Clough, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, during a breakfast held at the Museum-establishes a long-term collaborative partnership between the two cultural institutions.

As an Affiliate, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science will have access to Smithsonian resources, including its 136 million-object collections, scholarships, traveling exhibitions, and membership benefits.  It will also give the Museum and the Smithsonian Institution the opportunity to pursue high level collaborations around Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM), climate change, the natural world and digital initiatives.

"This affiliation allows us to provide enriched opportunities to our community and visitors," said George Sparks, President and CEO of the Museum. "Partnering with the internationally recognized Smithsonian is an honor. It enables us to further our mission and maximize the educational impact of the Museum."

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science joins 172 esteemed museums and educational and cultural organizations in 40 states, Panama, and Puerto Rico that hold this affiliate status.

"We are delighted to launch this new Affiliation between the Smithsonian and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science," said Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough. "Working together we can truly make a difference in STEAM education in Denver and throughout the state of Colorado."
