DENVER – Feb. 20 – The Denver Museum of Nature & Science and CBS4, KCNC-TV, will host the fourth annual Girls and Science, a one-day event on March 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. All ages are welcome. Activities will be oriented to children ages 8 to 13.
Twenty-two Science Clubhouses will be hosted by Career Mentors, working in STEAM fields. Using activities and conversations, Career Mentors will inspire girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Guests will hear how mentors were inspired to pursue work in a STEAM field and try careers on, test them out and play.
“We can’t wait to share this event with the community!” said Dr. Gabriela Chavarria, the Museum’s vice president of research and collections. “It is so important for girls to see and connect with role models doing science-based work that inspires them. We hope everyone who attends leaves feeling excited about the immense opportunities science presents, and hope this event inspires many to become the next generation of STEAM professionals.”
“This is my fourth year hosting a clubhouse and what I really love about Girls & Science is that it encourages girls to be the next generation of scientists,” CBS4 Meteorologist Lauren Whitney said. “There are so many great STEAM careers and I am honored to have an opportunity to help motivate girls to pursue their dreams.”
According to a 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economics and Statistics Administration, women in 2015 filled 47 percent of all U.S. jobs but only 24 percent of STEM jobs. The Museum and CBS4, KCNC-TV, host this event to inspire all students to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, art and math in hopes of playing a role in achieving greater representation and parity among women and minorities in these careers.
Girls are inspired to pursue STEAM topics when people believe in them, encourage them and invite them to further develop their interests, so the Girls and Science event is for their supporters as well: family, friends, teachers and mentors. We hope whole families (including dads and brothers) and extended social groups will experience this inspiring event together.
The event is included with general admission for all Museum guests. Children and teens ages 3 to 18 will receive a discounted admission of $4. Tickets to the IMAX 3D films “America’s Musical Journey,” “Conquest of the Skies” and “Jerusalem” will be 50 percent off and must be purchased onsite the day of the event. Limited parking is available for free at the Museum; please consider using alternative transportation.
Organized youth groups receive free admission with advance reservations at 303-370-6000.
