DENVER―February 2― The Denver Museum of Nature & Science and CBS4, KCNC-TV, will host “Girls and Science,” a one-day event on Saturday, February 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. The theme is “Science Clubhouse,” which encourages girls to step into and explore careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
The event is open to all Museum visitors that day, and children and youths ages 3-18 will receive a discounted admission of $4. Girls and Science is sponsored by MWH Global, with support from Encana and SparkFun.
“It’s always a win when we can engage young people in scientific exploration,” said Peggy Day, Denver Museum of Nature & Science director of strategic projects. “Girls and Science personalizes science, providing role models for our guests, especially young women as they explore their career-related interests. This is particularly important given that while women represent nearly 50 percent of the workforce, they hold only 24 percent of science, technology, engineering, and math positions in the United States.”
In a departure from the typical model for a career fair, women role models in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math will host “Clubhouses” that present a unique look into their work through activities, exposure to “tools of the trade, and stories of their personal career path.”
“I’m excited to help inspire girls to study for STEAM careers,” said Lauren Whitney, CBS4 weather anchor. “Now is the time for girls to become astronauts, engineers and meteorologists. I’ll be there to show girls of all ages the fun in science.”
In addition to the Science Clubhouses, girls and their families can participate in activities that let them try careers on, test them out, and play.
