The Institute for Science & Policy Launches New Podcast Series: Clearing the Air.

The eight-part series examines air pollution in Colorado and beyond, and how we are navigating this complex problem that knows no borders

DENVER Today, the Institute of Science & Policy, a project of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, released season three of its award-winning podcast, Laws of Notion. Clearing the Air: The Hazy Future of Our Skies is an eight-episode series exploring the quality of our air, and its impact on our health, economy, and climate. Through in-depth interviews and storytelling, the series uncovers how communities around Colorado – and the world – are fighting to clean up our air.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are at least 4.2 million premature deaths each year due to air pollution around the globe. Colorado’s Front Range has repeatedly failed to meet the EPA’s national air quality standards, putting local policymakers and regulators under pressure to fix the air pollution affecting us all.

Whether it's increased traffic from a growing population, wildfire smoke descending on the Front Range, or industrial emissions crossing a fence line – our air is a complex stew of ingredients. This new podcast series examines the science and sources behind air pollution, why the effects are not felt equally, and how historical and current policies are – or aren’t – addressing the issue.

“Since air is often invisible, it’s easy to ignore something we don’t always see,” says Kristan Uhlenbrock, podcast host and director of the Institute for Science & Policy. “So, our story brings nuance and deeper thinking into how we solve our air pollution challenge. Because as a society, we’re facing tough decisions and tradeoffs that affect people’s health, particularly for communities most at risk.”

The podcast features on-the-ground reporting and exclusive interviews including:

  • Michael Ogletree, Director, Air Pollution Control Division, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
  • Adrienne Sandoval, Air and Radiation Director, EPA
