Museum Hosts International Lepidopterists Meeting

Meeting of the Lepidopterists' Society and the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica  to be held at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science July 23-29

DENVER - July 23, 2012 - The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is honored to host the annual meeting of the Lepidopterists' Society and the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica from July 23 through July 29.  This will be the first-ever combined conference with both the European and North American societies. More than 170 scientists, researchers, students, and teachers from 20 different countries will attend the conference to enhance their professional development, share ideas, strengthen partnerships, and discover new resources to advance their studies of Lepidoptera-the large order of insects including moths and butterflies.

Registrants will participate in an assortment of activities from field trips with local experts throughout the week to symposia filled with local and international knowledge. A public talk by noted author and lepidopterist Dr. Robert Michael Pyle is available to registrants and the public.

"We are thrilled to host this conference and welcome guests from all over the world to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science," said Dr. Frank Krell, the Museum's curator of entomology. "Colorado is home to a diverse Lepidoptera fauna, so it is fitting that we gather here for the annual meeting."

Butterflies: The Bright Wings of Summer

Thursday, July 26, 7 p.m., $8 Museum member, $10 nonmember, $8 student

Butterflies just have a way of brightening people's lives. But how much do you really know about these seemingly ubiquitous creatures? In this illustrated talk, lepidopterist and writer Dr. Robert Michael Pyle will immerse you in the lifeways and habitats of these most beloved of insects.  Pyle, a Denver native, will discuss the ecology, natural history, and conservation of butterflies, with special reference to the Rockies. Along the way he will touch on monarch migration, butterfly gardening, and getting kids outdoors.
