NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE – NATURE TO MEDICINE: DEADLIEST LIFESAVERS WITH ZOLTAN TAKACS

The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver proudly presents National Geographic Live – Nature to Medicine: Deadliest Lifesavers with Zoltan Takacs on Thursday, April 27 at 7:30pm in the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall. Tickets are $34 for adults and $18 for children 12 and under (plus applicable service fees). Tickets are on sale at newmancenterpresents.com or by phone at 303.871.7720. The presentation is co-presented by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
Biomedical scientist and adventurer Zoltan Takacs has been researching, publishing and lecturing about the world of venomous creatures for most of his life. Takacs is highly aware of the contradictory nature of venom – a substance that is both deadly and lifesaving. Renowned for his work with the curative properties of venom, Takacs will take the audience on a journey examining the danger of working firsthand with such a potent substance while illuminating the remarkable medical opportunities it presents.

About Zoltan Takacs:
Academic assignment and personal interest have taken Dr. Zoltan Takacs to 158 countries. His work involves extracting venom and DNA samples from venomous animals in the most remote and inhospitable jungles, coral reefs, and deserts on the Earth. Access to these habitats is aided by his expertise as an aircraft pilot and scuba diver, as well as his ability to live out of a backpack for weeks. Dr. Takacs has carried out various research projects on snake venom pharmacology and evolutionary genetics at Rockefeller University, Columbia University, and Yale University. He is a co-inventor of the proprietary Designer Toxin technology, a novel technique that generates millions of toxin variants and selects the ones (drug leads) that specifically bind to a target to determine the outcome of a disease.
