New Photography Exhibition Showcases the Stunning Beauty of the Alaskan Arctic
"Arctic Sanctuary" opens March 2 and is included in general admission at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science
DENVER-February 27, 2012-A new photography exhibition, "Arctic Sanctuary," featuring the photography of Jeff Jones, reveals the natural landscape, significance, and stunning beauty of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The exhibition opens Friday, March 2, on all three floors of the Leprino Family Atrium at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and is included with general admission.
The exhibition's 50 images take visitors to one of the most wild and remote places on Earth. Showcasing images from large-scale panoramas to intimate and abstract studies of nature's elemental forms, "Arctic Sanctuary" is an exploration of wilderness and its meaning in the modern world.
"I believe one of the great values of the refuge is that it requires you to increase your self-reliance," said Jones. "You have to figure things out for yourself. You and this land. Right here, all around you. What's essential; what's not? Such first-hand experience is vital to the human spirit."
"Arctic Sanctuary" celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in an effort to draw national attention to the refuge.

Explore the majestic Arctic National Wildlife Refuge with photographer Jeff Jones as he transports you to the diverse habitats that make the refuge the most species-rich conservation area in the circumpolar north. Jones will share photographic techniques he used to capture these stunning landscapes. Following the program, enjoy a special showing of the "Arctic Sanctuary" photography exhibition and a book signing where Jones will be joined by his coauthor, Laurie Hoyle. About the Artist
Wilderness landscape photographer Jeff Jones began his pursuit of photography 25 years ago. His keen understanding of the natural world, coupled with decades of experience in remote backcountry and wilderness areas, form the foundation for his exceptional landscape photography. His works-from sweeping vistas to close-up abstracts-reveal his respect for and endless fascination with landscapes. With a primary focus on wilderness areas and shared public lands, he has photographed a number of national parks, including Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon. As an active environmentalist, Jones follows in the American tradition of raising public awareness of wilderness through art, and his work has supported numerous art and environmental organizations. His traveling exhibitions include "A Wilderness Worth Saving" and "Future of Sequoias: Sustaining Parklands in the 21st Century." His work is shown in traveling exhibitions and at galleries and museums. It is also part of private collections in Santa Fe, Minneapolis, Fairbanks, and in Santa Barbara, his home base.
